Supercar, for me, is anything that has exceptional performance, in any form. For example, Toyota Helix can handle rocky roads like few others. The Noble M400 can take a track as well as only the very best can.

But where do you draw the line? That's personal opinion, but it has to be agreed by most that it is among the best.

i think it has to be...
_____________
very expensive; atleast $200,000
_____________
very high top speed, not matched by high performance/sport cars.
i'd say somewhere around 180-200
_____________
has to turn heads. be very pretty and aerodynamic. should have lots of vents/scoops
_____________
and should have a racing history in a specific venue; that is impressive

Hah I had this same arguement on Yahoo Import Cars:1 chat room....

Like I said on there...I think a supercar is:
1. represents the most technologically advanced performance applications for a street-legal car.
2. Performs very well at going fast, being quick, handling well, and stopping well.
3. Is exotic: both rare and beautiful (subjective of course)
4. Costs a lot of money: exclusivity is very important to some people

That's my basic definition of a supercar.
For example, a mitsubishi Evolution FQ400 has supercar-LIKE performance, but it is not technically a supercar.

Something that only the wealthy can afford (over $200,000)

0-60 under 4 seconds

top speed 200mph+

Rarely seen on the road

Mid-engine

Not made in mass quantities. Reserved for the rich in order to indicate status.

With that said, the truth to all this is that there is no concrete definition of a supercar....thats all there is to this issue...period.

It seems the same qualities in all definitions is price and rarity. Those aren't really givens, not like performance qualities would be.

Well, for me the supercar class isn't so exclusive. A supercar to me is one which simply excells in track performance over defined road practicality.

210MPH+ Top speed
Nothing less then V8
0-60 in 1.8 seconds or less
Great racing heritage
As someone else had said 1g+ on the skid pad
Wide wheel base
Very low
Sleek
Curvy
Out of the ordinary
Hard to get your paws on
In a way, not street legal, not street legal to me screams "performance", street legal just sort of hinders the poor car into the governments standards. But I suppose it would still be nice to take it around the block to show off.

so these are not supercars then...

Jaguar XJ220
twin turbo V6
top speed 212 mph.

or this

Porsche 911 GT2
boxer 6
top speed 196 mph.

or any other porsche, for that matter (except the cayenne).

i think the keywords for the supercar are

rare
fast (top speed and acceleration)
great track performance
exotic looks (shouldn´t look like anything else on the road, or like any other supercar for that matter)
unpractical (not necessarily, but usually...)

I think the ferrari f430 embellishes all the attributes of a supercar, fast, rare, you can tell that it can make you smile just by sitting in the driver seat. I also think most supercars are hand made or involve hand made components, not just made by a machine.

I think the new Z06 is a supercar, no, it's not very expensive for what it is but in my mind its a supercar. Maybe I'm just biased :).
