Kiss those BGCs goodbye

Top: Most basic trainees will wear UVEX XC protective eyewear beginning Oct. 1. Bottom: Basic trainees with smaller faces who can’t the UVEX XC comfortably will be issued Revision Sawfly protective eyewear. — Rick Kozak / Military Times
For the first time in the Army’s history, basic trainees will be issued protective eyewear to be worn during training and a frame of choice for garrison. Issuing eyewear, with prescription inserts for those who need them, is effective Oct. 1 and is “expected to be in full swing by mid-fiscal year,” said Army Chief of Optometry Col. Michael Kaminsky.

This sounds the death knell for the traditional brown frame for Army eyeglasses wearers, nicknamed by generations of soldiers as the BCG, or birth control glasses.

The decision to issue protective eyewear followed a nine-week study at Fort Benning, Ga., in which infantrymen in two basic training companies, their instructors and drill sergeants wore three prototypes, providing feedback to the Army’s chief of optometry and Program Executive Office Soldier, which ran the program.

The model chosen for all 60,000 soldiers who go through basic training annually is the UVEX XC, which is already on the list of approved eyewear. The Revision Sawfly model is an alternative for soldiers with smaller faces.

Providing protective eyewear to all is expected to cost $2 million.

“It’s the right thing to do. The protection of each pair of eyes will more than pay for the program in terms of rehab costs for one injured soldier,” Kaminsky said.

Im suprised noone has asked what BCG's were. If I joined the military, I wouldve for sure had to wear them, and then I would never snag a fighter pilot husband.

army birth control glasses are issued to every trainee when they begin basic training, they are brown framed glasses that are practically unbreakable, they also amlost always prevent the wearer from getting laid. I know soldiers that when they finished basic training made a point out of wearing their glasses while fucking their girlfriends.

no they work most of the time. I only have had two pairs break and they were both results of a direct hit to them.

the first pair that got broke was in AIT in ft knox, standing in line for chow a soldier ahead of me in line had his civilian glasses on, a big no-no, so when the drill sergeant called him out for it he said that they had gotten broke, the drill sergeant said they were unbreakable, here private foster let me see yours to prove it. he took them by the strap and started whipping them against the table, after about ten hits both lenses popped out, he picked them back up and handed them to me and told me to pop them back in. I took the pieces and looked at them but he had broken the frames on both sides.

the second time my glasses got broke was when we were on the bus right off of the plane from Iraq, I was in the front of the bus and tapped another soldier to stop since I thought the bus was full, he just went bip and punched me right between the eyes. the glasses broke right down the center, I still have half of them, but I didnt get hurt at all except for my pride.

Birth Control Glasses.

Birth control glasses (BCGs) are military-issued spectacles. They are so-called, because if you wear a pair, you will be so ugly that you'll never get laid.

Incidentally, my pair of BCGs are now "old school," as I haven't seen any of you youngsters issued the same style. Just when the glasses I were issued became fashionable, the military up and changed the style of BCGs.
