The Departed

Has anyone watched this movie?

Me and my dad were alone, and I had no plans that Saturday night, and so didn't he so we decided to have some father and son time. I was dragged in (He didn't want to watch Borat, which I still haven't seen yet) to watch "The Departed". Althrough the cast sounded awesome, the trailer on tv didn't convince me at all and it looked like another action movie.

I am definetly buying the DVD after it's released. For some reason, and I don't know why, the movie reminded me of Pulp Fiction (Not for its story telling style) and althrough it's a remake, I loved the story and the 2 double agents and the theme.

Has anyone seen this? I feel like this movie is definetly oscar worthy, but it's not getting any attention.

Is any movie really getting that much Oscar buzz? I can't think of a front runner. But aside from that, The Departed is an awesome movie. I don't think Scorsese will win Best Director for it. It would be kind of fucked up if did though, because even though the Departed was good, it's probably not in his top five.

Yeah I think Scorcese is getting a nomination out of this, but no way he is gonna win. Unless the rest of the movies this year suck...

I'm really excited to see what actors get nominated. DiCaprio deserves one, but he also has Blood Diamond (havent seen it, but most reviews say his performance is oscar worthy there too). And I'm wondering if Mark Wahlberg will get one. He was a complete fucking scene stealer, and even though he wasnt in it that much he could get a supporting actor nom. I think it'd be hella funny seing Marky Mark get nominated. Who woulda saw that one coming?

And since its a remake, is the screenplay considered Best Original, or Best Adapted?

I was very tempted to see this movie, but Dicaprio's involvement kept me away. Seeing him play a badass/gangster type just seemed silly to me, kinda the way his shit accent in Blood Diamond makes the whole movie look retarded.
I don't know, I'll probably at least rent it when it comes out. I'm sure it's a good movie, but I doubt it's worth the $10 admission. I'm very picky about what movies I lay out that kind of money for.

Yeah, I agree with mike on both points. I haven't seen blood diamond yet, but he does have a terrible accent from what I seen in previews.
Well, all the accents looked stupid in the trailers for The Departed, or Heath Ledger's in Brokeback. But within 5 minutes of the movie you dont even realize they are there, they were all just pitch perfect. The reviews say much of the same for the accents in Blood Diamond. Its too hard to get a real feel for the accents in the trailers. And, Dicaprrio got nominated for both Blood Diamond and The Departed at the BFCA, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he does a pretty good job in it.

And if the accents do sound stupid, its cause South African accents naturally sound stupid...

I saw it in theatres and again last night on youtube, and its such a good movie. I like the part where they are in the alley and dicaprio is supposed to arrest damon, and then Damon stabs the asian guy.

Why is his playing a badass gangster type silly to you? Are you stuck with an image of him such as in Titanic? Because I can tell you I didn't like him much from that, but seeing him in other shit (The Aviator, The Beach) made me realize he is actually a pretty damn good actor. And what the other guys said, if you aren't going to a highly praised and recommeded movie because you thought one of the actors (there are many other great actors in the movie besides DiCaprio) couldn't play the part is just stupid imo.

I agree though that movie prices these days are fucking ridiculous.

I don't agree with everyone else about this movie. I thought the characters were pretty off. Why does Leo's character even have any loyalty to Martin Sheen's character?
Well, for one, cause they are both cops that have been working together on the same case for years....

And Martin Sheen was the only other human being alive that really knew who Leo was, what he was going through, and cared about it. The only other person that knew was Marky Mark, and he was really the "shoulder to cry on" type.
